Music of Kaija Saariaho, this year's composer-in-residence of The Dutch Orchestra and Ensemble Academy (NJO), is present widely in the Academy's summer concert series Muziekzomer. The impressive series also features works from Magnus Lindberg.
Internationally renowned young baritone Arttu Kataja will feature as Licone/Caronte in a concert version of Joseph Haydn's opera Orlando Paladino. Kataja will be singing in a high-class company with René Jacobs conducting the Freiburger Barockorchester.

Young and emerging conductor comet Santtu-Matias Rouvali made his debut in front of The Hague Philharmonic last year. Now he returns to conduct the orchestra with a preview of the forthcoming season's programme.
Hosted by the New European Ensemble, the festival presents a musical portrait of Kaija Saariho. Violinist Petteri Iivonen will play Saariaho's Graal théâtre and Virpi Räisänen-Midth willl sing her work Grammaire des rêves.
Olli Mustonen is an internationally renowned pianist, but also an applauded composer and conductor. This time Mustonen will be conducting the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic's concert at Vredenburg, the programme including the fifth Symphony by Jean Sibelius.
The opening concert will feature the Belgian premiere of Saariaho's clarinet concerto D'om Le Vrai Sens, played by clarinet virtuoso Kari Kriikku. The Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Jonathan Schiffman.
The festival will conclude with Saariaho's chamber music. The programme includes e.g. Je sens un deuxième coeur for viola, cello and piano. Alexis Descharmes will play Saariaho's works Petals and Près for cello and electronics.

Concert organist Kalevi Kiviniemi plays a recital in the international organ music festival in Dudelange. The festival celebrates its 10 years anniversary this year, and the 100 year-old Stalhuth organ of the St. Martin church in Dudelange. The concert programme will be many-sided, including free improvisations by Kiviniemi himself.
Saarinen's masterful choreography takes influences from the old Shaker movement. It brings out a dedication to work and community, and the ritual essence of dance. The soulful chants will be performed by The Boston Camerata.
Jazz musicians pianist Aki Rissanen and Belgian sax player Robin Verheyen perform a comissioned classical piece at De Bijloke. The work is for piano, saxophone, soprano and string quartet. The duo will be accompanied by Claron McFadden and Kryptos Kwartet.

Defunensemble will perform at the fourth edition of Festival LOOP! The ensemble will be at home at LOOP 4, which presents electroacoustic comtemporary music focusing on innovation and fresh talent. The concert features e.g. a world premiere of Kimmo Kuokkala's new work O for modular ensemble and live electronics.
The choir of Sibelius Academy's church music department tours in Luxemburg, starting from Trinitatierkirche Vianden (4 Dec) and moving on to the city of Luxemburg, Église St. Jean (6 Dec). With Timo Nuoranne conducting, the concert repertoire will include some new Finnish church music.
Accordionist guru Kimmo Pohjonen and sample wizard Samuli Kosminen join forces with Proton String Quartet in the astonishing contemporary project Uniko, built around accordion and sampling.

Electronic artist Mika Vainio and Belgian cellist Arne Deforce join forces once again at Vooruit. Both artists have a fascination for improvisation and electronics, and their previous cooperation at Etoiles Polaires in 2007 left them wanting for more.
Tempera Quartet will play Pehr Henrik Nordgren's third string quartet at Concertgebouw's Kleine Zaal. Those who can't make it to 11 Jan event will have a second chance: the concert is repeated 13 Jan.
