Mäntyjärvi, a choral singer himself, has mainly composed music for choirs. His works are internationally recognised, as many choirs have taken his works to their repertoire. As a composer, he describes himself as an eclectic traditionalist: his musical language is based on a traditional approach, but he also adopts influences from a number of styles fusing them to into his own idiom.
